Is theBalm owned by a parent company that tests on animals?

theBalm is not owned by any parent company that tests on animals.

In the beauty industry, it’s common for brands to be owned by a larger company. These are called parent companies, and they’re often global corporations such as L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, or Procter & Gamble.

Most of these parent companies are not cruelty-free, since they test on animals to some degree. They might also own several brands that are not cruelty-free.

However, some of the brands owned by these parent companies are cruelty-free and have strict policies against animal testing.

There are pros and cons to supporting cruelty-free brands owned by parent companies that aren’t.

You can either:

  • Choose to boycott them since they’re a part of a larger conglomerate that engages in animal testing.
  • Choose to support some of them based on the individual ethics of each parent company, or only purchase from them if there are no independent alternatives.
  • Choose to support them since they are 100% cruelty-free even though their parent company is not, therefore showing their parent company that consumers are favoring their cruelty-free brands.

In the cruelty-free community, the majority of conscious consumers purchase from cruelty-free brands even if they’re owned by a parent company that tests on animals. This is our stance at Cruelty-Free Kitty as well. We believe that supporting all cruelty-free brands is the only path towards a cruelty-free and more ethical beauty industry.

It’s also worth noting that subsidiary brands of parent companies are unique corporations by themselves. They act as independent branches and operate independently from the parent company, and can also be sold to other companies including cruelty-free ones.

Another aspect to consider is that many parts of the world only have access to limited brands, so their only cruelty-free options are owned by large corporations. This is a concern we hear about constantly from our international readers. Given this complex landscape, we believe that supporting all cruelty-free brands is ethical as well as practical.

Our standard processing time is between 2-7 business days; processing times may vary during sales, Holidays, or promotional events. No adjustments can be made on orders once they are placed. No pricing adjustments can be made on orders prior to sale or after sale.

theBalm currently offers free standard shipping on all domestic U.S orders, in addition to Alaska and Hawaii (exceptions include Flash Sales and other site wide promotions. Please see our Flash Sale FAQ's page for details)! Our standard processing time is between 2-7 business days; processing times may vary during sales, Holidays, or promotional events, and may be further impacted by UPS, USPS or Fedex delivery times during COVID-19. FLASH SALE: $5 shipping charge for orders under $50, Free shipping for orders over $50.

Puerto Rico Shipping

theBalm Standard Puerto Rico shipping is $30 or free for orders over $150. Puerto Rico shipping fees may vary during sales, Holidays, or promotional events.


International Shipping

theBalm Standard international shipping is $30 or free for orders over $150. Fees do not include duties or taxes. If you have questions regarding the duty or tax rate for your package, please contact your local postal service for more information.
International shipping fees may vary during sales, Holidays, or promotional events, duties and taxes are not included in advertised shipping rates on thebalm.com and are the responsibility of the receiving customer.

If for any reason you are unhappy with your purchase from theBalm.com, we will gladly accept your return if received within 30 days from the shipment date. 

Unused product can be returned for either store credit to www.theBalm.com or a refund of the purchase price (not including shipping). Products purchased in bundles cannot be returned or exchanged. 

We’d be happy to exchange any gently used products for store credit to www.theBalm.com if received within 30 days from the shipment date, for domestic USA shipments only, in addition to Alaska and Hawaii. We are unable to honor exchanges on International and Puerto Rico shipments.

We are unable to accept returns and exchanges of excessively used products or products not purchased from theBalm.com.

Please mail your return or exchange to the address below and include a reference to your order number. Turnaround time for processing your return is generally 3 business days, but can fluctuate depending on the time of year. Once the return has been received and inspected in our warehouse you’ll receive an email notification confirming your return.

If your return qualifies for a refund, your refund will be applied to the original form of payment. Please allow up to five business days for the refund to be processed by your bank.  

If an exchange was requested you will receive an email notification with either tracking information or your merchandise credit to be used at theBalm.com.

Returns for products purchased through our Shade Match Service

Domestic U.S Customers ONLY, in addition to Alaska and Hawaii

We understand how difficult it can be when ordering foundations and concealers online, so we offer a Shade Match Guarantee for your convenience. If you did not get the perfect match on your first order, you can exchange the product for a different shade within 30 days at no cost to you. Please contact us at info@thebalm.com or live chat us during 9am-4pm PST to get shade-matched into your new shade. We will then help you exchange and receive your new shade. theBalm will cover all domestic continental US shipping costs on your replacement Anne T. Dote product. Shade Match Guarantee applies a replacement order on your first purchase only. 

International Customers and Puerto Rico Customers

Our Shade Match Guarantee extends to our International Customers as well, however International Customers are responsible for shipping costs associated with the new product.
